Colonial assemblies struggled to balance local autonomy with the demands of a growing nation as British authority weakened. American leaders grappled with creating a government that could unite thirteen diverse colonies while respecting their individual rights. The Albany Congress of 1754 first proposed a union that would later inspire the Constitution. As the colonies moved from defense against French threats to independence, they faced new challenges in creating a stable government. The Constitutional Convention of 1787 sought to address these issues, but the process was fraught with disagreement over representation, slavery, and federal power. The resulting Constitution established a framework that would endure through the nation's first major crisis. The struggle to balance national unity with regional differences continued through the Missouri Compromise of 1820. This period saw the emergence of new political forces and the consolidation of American identity.
