In the mid-5th century, 17-year-old Baithene and 16-year-old Ethne, children of a chieftain in Ireland, live in a world of loyalty and faith under their father's rule. After being baptized by Saint Patrick, they are captured by British pirates and sold into slavery. Their journey takes them from Ireland to Britain and finally to Rome, where they find refuge with a Christian family in the Aventine palace. As the Vandals prepare to sack Rome, the siblings must navigate a world of slavery, cultural collision, and faith. They must find their place in a crumbling empire while holding fast to their beliefs. Can they find their way back to their home and family, or will they be forever lost in the shadow of a world that is falling?
