The Dutch Republic, once a proud global power, faced collapse as its leaders failed to address deep divisions. In 1795, Stadholder William V fled the Netherlands as French forces advanced, leaving a power vacuum. The Batavian Republic emerged from this chaos, but struggled to establish itself as a unified nation. French influence grew as the Republic became increasingly dependent on Napoleon's empire. When Napoleon's fortunes turned, the Dutch people seized the opportunity to reclaim their independence. The House of Orange returned in 1813, but the nation faced the immense challenge of building a new government from the ruins of French occupation. With a weak economy, a divided population, and the need to establish a constitutional framework, the fledgling kingdom faced an uncertain future.
