The Russian Empire under Tsar Nicholas II faced a profound crisis as its traditional institutions crumbled under the weight of internal contradictions and external pressures. As the Tsar's government struggled to modernize while maintaining autocratic control, the intelligentsia and revolutionary movements grew increasingly disillusioned with the ruling class's inability to understand the needs of the Russian people. The 1905 revolution revealed the government's fatal misjudgment of peasant desires and political aspirations, leading to a series of miscalculations that ultimately culminated in the March 1917 revolution. As the Duma collapsed and the Tsar's authority weakened, the empire's diverse ethnic groups and social classes began to fracture, setting the stage for a complete transformation of Russia's political landscape.
