The Byzantine Empire, founded as a Greek colony and later transformed into a Christian empire, stood as the last bastion of Roman power for over a thousand years. From the reign of Constantine the Great to the final struggle against the Ottomans, the empire faced relentless challenges: barbarian invasions, religious conflicts, and the rise of powerful neighbors. Yet as the empire weakened, the final siege of 1453 saw the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI, lead a desperate defense against Mehmed II's forces.
